Visual impairment is one of the four most significant contributions to lost independence among older Americans, according to the Alliance for Aging Research. The Vassar Eye Center's trained volunteers can provide you with the information and resources to help you lead independent and satisfying lives.

The Vassar Eye Center at Bayshore Community Hospital is focussed on helping people with sight difficulties by showing and explaining the latest specialized equipment and aids. An extensive, free community service for people with diminishing vision or blindness, the center is staffed by trained volunteers who:

The Vassar Eye Center, established in 1995, is the only eye center of its kind in the United States.

The Center does not sell equipment or supplies, but has a wide variety of these materials on display, enabling guests to obtain first-hand experience working with the technology and discovering what is available for people with low vision or blindness. There is no pressure on guests who are greeted warmly on a first-name basis.
