Camp Happiness
serves New Jersey's blind community. The camp, established
in 1910, is a waterfront facility on the Sandy Hook Bay.
Every year for 100 years, Camp Happiness has served the blind of New
Jersey with donations from people who care!
Camp Happiness
offers the traditional FREE summer vacation for blind NJ adults
that started 78 years ago. Today, the day-camp program has
become our primary focus, offering the creative ground-breaking
programs listed below. The Camp Happiness staff provides day camp
programs Monday to Thursday year-around. Day Campers from across Monmouth
County are transported to and from our facility via our NJBCA van.
Their lives are enriched through participation in programs and
activities.
Under
Doug Scotts leadership there is now a very impressive art
program, a job development program, a progressive computer
training program, discussion groups, and extensive recreational
activities. The new Employment and Job Search program is
underway to help find jobs for the blind. With support and
encouragement, they will overcome obstacles not encountered by
sighted job seekers.
Another
program recently completed is the conversion of a large garage on
the property into a gym which has expanded the camps focus
on health and fitness. This project was completed with the help
of Eagle Scouts from a local Boy Scouts of America troop. All
this takes place while Camp Happiness operates on a rather lean-and-mean
budget.
